This was such an exciting week in ISM! Not only was it the week before the break, so everyone was counting down until school ended for the week, but I've made a lot of progress in finding my mentor. I had my last interview this week, with Ms. Anna Rupani from Mosaic Family Services, and I really enjoyed speaking with her. She works as a public interest attorney at the nonprofit and primarily does family law, handling domestic violence cases. She had such a passion for service, and I'm so happy I got to talk to her. I think that she would be a really great mentor for me this year, and is really what I had in mind when setting out to work on nonprofit law this year in ISM. I emailed her asked her if she would consider being my mentor on Thursday, and as of right now am waiting for a response, but I really hope she says yes! I also worked a lot on my Research Showcase invitation this week. I've gotten really pretty invitations before from my friends, and this is the first time I'll have the chance to give some to my friends, so I want them to turn out really well. Overall, it's been a really exciting week and as I'm going into this break, I hope to get ahead on some of my work, and am anxiously awaiting a response from Ms. Rupani, too!
Though my classes are winding down before Thanksgiving Break, I'm still stressing out over everything due in the coming weeks in ISM. I have one more interview next week and (hopefully!) it will be my last. Not to say that I haven't been enjoying the interview process, but I really want to get a finalized mentor soon. I've pretty much decided that unless I really love this last interview with a nonprofit lawyer, I will decide to focus on family and divorce law this year. So we'll still have to see how this interview goes, but at least I'm coming to some more solid decisions. Apart from that, this past week I presented a Research Speech on the different primary and secondary research I've done since school started, and I think it went alright. I was really nervous for it, but in the end, I just tried to speak about the genuine experience I had gotten from each interview and it didn't go too badly. It's crazy to me that we're already working on building up this really extensive speech for Final Presentation Night, because it's only November, but at the same time I understand that this will be a really thorough speech and it needs to be built up over time. Overall, it's been a good week, I just keep looking ahead to all the future looming deadlines.
This was a really busy week with all of my school work, not just ISM. Generally I think that the second to last week of the six weeks is the most stressful, just because there's so much due soon and the deadline is approaching for grades to go in. I had a field trip with APES on Wednesday and my fifth, and final (required) interview. I got to speak to Amanda Doom, the first actual nonprofit lawyer that I've had the opportunity to meet, and it was really great getting to see the different dynamic of nonprofit immigration law. She works with the Catholic Charities of Dallas and getting to speak to her was surprisingly so different from what I had thought it was going to be like after talking to the for-profit private attorneys earlier on. I really got a sense of the difference between private and nonprofit practices and it was overall a great experience. Apart from that, this week I have to worry about the upcoming speech I'm presenting next week about my research so far and creating an original work proposal. I'm in particular worried about the original work because I still don't even know exactly what I want to do as far as the field I'm studying, and so it's making me nervous to have to come up with an actual original product. I know that everything will be okay, but it's just been a really stressful time and for this week and the next few days, I'm feeling really overwhelmed.
